World Population Day (WPD), established by the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, falls on 11 July every year and focuses attention on the urgency and importance of population issues.
Regardless of your personal views concerning population, hopefully most of us can agree that the empowerment of women, choice and agency in regards to family size and worldwide access to affordable family planning and contraception services is a moral imperative. These are essential human rights no matter where we happen to live on the planet. Once these are in place, people tend to adopt smaller family sizes, which is better for families, for communities and for the planet.
In honor of WPD 2020, Post-Growth Australia spoke with 8 Billion Angel Producer Terry Spahr about the environmental consequences of our collective human impact in the USA and India – and why family planning is one essential solution to the many social and environmental problems we face on a global scale. The 12-minute interview with Terry starts at minute 6 on the podcast. Listen here: https://pgap.fireside.fm/wpd
