Country Comments

Papua New Guinea comprises the eastern half of the island New Guinea. The island is the third largest tropical rainforest in the world. Papua New Guinea’s abundant natural resources and current population level allow it to be very sustainable right now.

Two major obstacles to maintaining a sustainable future are a high fertility rate of just over 3.5 children per woman and a growing exploitation by global industry of the country’s natural resources from fishing and logging to mining and agriculture. (1)

Papua New Guinea has one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS, fertility, and maternal mortality in the Pacific region. According to UNICEF, only 60% of boys and 50% of girls are enrolled in primary school. Domestic violence is a fact of life for two-thirds of women, and in some areas of the country, rates of domestic violence are as high as 100% of women in marriages.
