With a below replacement fertility since 1990, Slovakia has slowed its population growth to a crawl and for the past decade has remained essentially level. Air pollution, chemical and physical degradation of agricultural land,, water pollution, deforestation and damage to vegetation are considered the main environmental problems for the country. Policymakers have been slow to act on environmental health preferring to focus on economic growth at its expense. A gradual decline in population would help offset these damages caused by further economic expansion, however women’s reproductive rights have been under assault recently by conservatives in power trying to restrict abortion rights. And although Slovakia remains a signatory to the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, its parliament voted to reject the Convention altogether. (1)
